SF CITY FC 4, DAVIS LEGACY 3: CITY ADVANCE IN US OPEN CUP PLAY AFTER A THRILLING MATCH

San Francisco City Football Club booked their place in the final round of qualifying of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Davis Legacy. Midfielder and captain Johannes Demarzi settled the tie after SF City FC fought from behind 3 times throughout the match.

Fellow NorCal Premier League rivals Davis Legacy struck first in the 8th minute after Carlos Lezama’s shot ricocheted off defender Adam Ringler into the SF City goal. In the 24th minute, a beautiful buildup by the SF City FC attacking front 3 resulted in a goal and the equalizer for forward Reed Williams. However, just moments later, Davis Legacy would answer in the 26th minute. During a throw-in the SF City half, Kevin Schulte’s half volley hit the crossbar and came right back into the midfielder’s pathway for a second attempt, which found the back of the net for a 2-1 halftime advantage.

After the break, SF City FC pushed forward and created a plethora of chances to tie the match. In the 68th minute, Danny Kirkland converted a spot kick after Johannes Demarzi was hauled down in the area after a scoring opportunity. At 2-2, the game was well poised for an exciting finish. With just over 10 minutes to play, Davis Legacy found themselves on the counter attack and strung together a few key passes leading to a neat finish from midfielder Andy Bagheri. Right on the ensuing kickoff down 2-3, SF City FC won a throw-in in the Davis final 3rd. The ball was thrown to the near post where defender Marc Tonkel headed home from about 2 yards out, tying the game 3-3. With just 5 minutes to spare, Johannes Demarzi was played a fantastic through ball and slotted home from 8 yards out. This gave SF City FC a famous 4-3 victory over their league rivals and a spot in the next round.

The victory advances SF City FC to the final round of U.S. Open Cup qualifying which will be played during the weekend of April 1st.
